Annie Potts, who plays the beloved Connie “MeeMaw” Tucker on Young Sheldon, thinks that letting the series reach its finale this soon is a big mistake. She thinks the CBS network could still use the series’ popularity to explore the story of the Coopers further.

When CBS announced the end of Young Sheldon this coming May, Potts and some of the cast were disheartened. This meant that they’d have to say goodbye to their roles soon.

It was a total “ambush” for all of them. Potts even thought they’d be filming for longer as Young Sheldon was the “No.1 show on the network TV” and “No.1 on Netflix.” She even mentioned that shows usually end when audiences feel the story is being dragged on, but Young Sheldon didn’t have that symptom.

“This one was especially hard because I was completely unprepared. I was shocked. I mean, the No. 1 show on network TV, No. 1 on Netflix. We’re, I think, all that people watch on TikTok besides a couple of recipes for pasta. It just seemed like such a stupid business move. Forgive me, but I don’t know. If a show is starting to drag or lag or have a lack of stories or whatever, then you kind of see it coming. We were totally ambushed by this. I was, anyway.

Iain Armitage, who played Young Sheldon himself, even agreed with Potts’ statement. He firmly believed that he and the team “could’ve done a lot more.”

“I totally get what Annie means… I mean, I’m not going to get to see Annie Potts every day. This is a real loss for me. More than anyone.”

Variety first reported Annie Potts and Iain Armitage’s statement thanks to an exclusive interview with them.

Despite the painful goodbyes, Armitage and Potts were confident that the series finale would be full of tears and that fans would have to prepare “a box of …with a roll of paper towels from the kitchen.”

More about Young Sheldon

Young Sheldon is a popular family TV series and a prequel to the iconic Big Bang Theory. It explores Sheldon Cooper’s past as well as his dynamic with his family.

CBS Network aired season 7 last February 15, 2024. They will continue to release 14 episodes until its one-hour special finale on May 16, 2024.

While we can certainly expect Annie Potts in the Young Sheldon finale, Variety also confirmed that Jim Parson, the actor who played the original Sheldon, and Mayim Bialik, who played Amy Farrah Fowler, will make a starring appearance.
