Half-Life 2 RTX is something gamers did not expect but are pleasantly surprised about. Half-Life 2 was a groundbreaking game on its release in 2004. It innovated physics in games while staying faithful to its original storytelling style—in an era full of cutscenes, Half-Life 2 barely had any.

Valve loves innovating

As a game company, Valve loves pushing technological innovations forward with games like Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life: Alyx, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 and Team Fortress 2.

  • Half-Life pioneered first-person shooters by including a narrative coinciding with the action.
  • Half-Life 2 revolutionized physics in video games, using it to solve puzzles and eliminate enemies.
  • Half-Life: Alyx pushed VR’s boundaries while keeping true to the universe’s canon.
  • Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 improved cooperative gameplay and replayability.
  • Team Fortress 2 introduced loot box opening, spreading it to other games like Overwatch and Roblox.

They are also known to support mods that revolutionize their game. An example would be Black Mesa, a complete overhaul of Half-Life 1’s graphics, levels and gameplay. Valve even let Crowbar Collective, Black Mesa’s developers, sell the mod as a standalone game with a $20 price tag. Now, Portal and Half-Life 2 modders push this technological boundary even more with its RTX inclusion.

Ray tracing

NVIDIA is rolling out new technology, one of which is introducing Ray Tracing to video games. It presents more realistic lighting, allowing real-time reflections that make the game world even more believable.

While this has been a staple in filmmaking, it has been a rarity among games. This is due to being very demanding for hardware. However, with NVIDIA’s new DLSS option, the performance just gets past the breakeven mark on the FPS counter with ray tracing on—sometimes it even performs better than a game at native resolution without DLSS.

Gamers wrote excited comments in the YouTube trailer for Half-Life 2 RTX. Many fans are eager to return to City 17, Ravenholm, Nova Prospekt and other areas.

The mod’s developers, Orbifold Studios, are adding better models and improving lighting for the whole game. With NVIDIA at the helm, Half-Life 2 RTX looks to be very promising.

Half-Life 2 RTX possible issues

Reddit users comment on the bugs and lag plaguing Portal RTX, stating constant crashes or unplayable framerates. Hopefully, NVIDIA and Orbifold Studios will find a way to fix this for Half-Life 2 RTX.

Gamers rejoice as an 18-year-old game receives a visual upgrade and optimization with DLSS. Something which cannot be said for Starfield since a leak shows its lack of DLSS support. NVIDIA’s year is looking good with this announcement and their recent trailer for Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty with Ray Tracing.
