Hartley Sawyer Facing Backlash After Inappropriate Tweets Resurface

HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA - MAY 18: Hartley Sawyer attends the premiere of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" at TCL Chinese Theatre on May 18, 2019 in Hollywood, California

Hartley Sawyer has found himself in hot water after some horrific tweets from almost a decade ago have resurfaced.

Hartley Sawyer, star of the CW hit series The Flash, has been facing a severe backlash. Some of his old, incredibly offensive tweets have resurfaced over the last few days.

Below are a handful of Hartleys racist, homophobic, and appalling tweets from 2012, 2013, and 2014.

All of them are pretty tough to read.

Currently 35 years old, Hartley Sawyer would have been 27, 28, and 29 at the time those offensive tweets were posted. He has since deleted his Twitter account, although he did offer an apology on his Instagram account a couple of ago.

Im not here to make excuses – regardless of the intention, my words matter and they carry profound consequences. I am incredibly sorry, ashamed, and disappointed in myself for my ignorance back then. I want to be very clear: this is not reflective of what I think or who I am now.

— Hartley Sawyers apology

Ironically, Hartley Sawyer seems to have a lot of similarities with the character he portrays on The Flash, Ralph Dibny.

In the show, Ralph Dibny is an ex-police detective turned Private Investigator after he was fired from the Police Department for planting evidence to frame a suspect. As the seasons go on, Ralph becomes a much better person.

This seems to similar to Sawyer himself. Like his character Ralph Dibny, Hartley Sawyer also had a past characterized by poor judgment. By all accounts though, Sawyer seems to have changed and appears to be a better person. He is an avid animal shelter volunteer, and he is often urging his fans to adopt animals in need.

As for where Sawyer goes from here, the answer is more complicated. His tweets were so offensive it may affect his monetization ability in the future.
