Last Sunday, Lewis Hamilton suffered racial abuse on social media after winning the British Grand Prix. The 7-time World Champion won a very controversial race, in which his rival Max Verstappen had an accident in the first lap and had to withdraw. Formula 1, FIA’s, and Mercedes released a statement shortly.

Statement from F1, the FIA, and Mercedes after Lewis Hamilton targeted by online racist abuse.

In a race remembered by Verstappen’s accident, Lewis Hamilton overcame a 10-second penalty to win in Silverstone. However, Hamilton had involvement in Max’s accident, and many people were unhappy with just a 10-second penalty.

This situation occurs in a tough time, after three players from the England National Football Team, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho, suffered racial abuse in the past week as well. Lewis Hamilton actively speaks out on racism, previously standing up for the Black Lives Matter movement. In addition, Mercedes changed its race suits color to black in a sign of solidarity.

At the beginning of the race, Lewis attempted to take over and surpass Max Verstappen. However, the Red Bull driver lost control of his car during a lap and got out of the race.

After an investigation on FIA’s behalf, Lewis received a 10-second penalty which he managed, and after overtaking multiple pilots, won the race.

Consequently, Verstappen used his social media platforms to announce his discontent.

“The penalty given does not help us and doesn’t do justice to the dangerous move Lewis made on track. Watching the celebrations while still in hospital is disrespectful and unsportsmanlike behavior but we move on.”

The race has fans on the edge of their seats as Hamilton gets closer to Max Verstappen. The dutch leads with 185 points, followed by Hamilton’s 177. The next Grand Prix takes place on August 1st, which can be a decisive one.
