Disney was happy to announce that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho will return for Moana 2 as Maui and Moana, respectively. Additionally, Moana 2 gets a brand new visual, giving us another look at the upcoming sequel.

The company made its official post on X/Twitter to celebrate Disney’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.

Audiences noticed many important details in this image. First, many are asking and are understandably worried about the strange gigantic creature (or monster?) behind Moana. Is this an enemy? An ally?

Fans are also proud that Moana is visibly older, as she wears a confident expression to, perhaps, explore the unknown or even fight against a worthy opponent. In the first film, the young female leader was around 16 years old when she first explored the vast ocean to find Maui.

Thanks to a new blog post by Disney, they confirmed that Moana will be around 19 or 20 years old in the second film.

Lastly, fans love the new look of our female protagonist. Will this mean that other characters will get a brand-new look as well?

More about Moana 2

The upcoming sequel was first announced way back in February. In this previous post, Disney gave us a first look at the mythical sea creatures found in the world of Moana.

The plot of Moana 2 seems to focus on the unexpected calling from her ancestors. Fans can expect brand-new characters, as implied by the teaser’s description: “Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.” Of course, this also means that the iconic character Maui will still be there to help our beloved princess.

Previously, Disney was supposed to release Moana’s sequel as a TV series. However, the team impressed Disney CEO Bob Iger. This eventually convinced him to turn Moana’s brand-new adventure into a second film.

Moana 2 will air in global theaters on November 27, 2024.
