The 2021 Formula 1 Championship is perhaps the most competitive season in years. After years of Mercedes' domination, Red Bull arose as a strong contender for Drivers' and Constructors' championships. In fact, Red Bull has the upper hand this season, Toto Wolff and Christian Horner agree.
Throughout the season, Red Bull won in eight out of 13 races. Particularly, Max Verstappen has been especially impressive. The Dutch driver won seven races by himself and would've probably won eight if it wasn't for a tire puncture in Baku.
Although Red Bull won twice as many races, Christian Horner and Toto Wolff agree that the two cars are more or less up to the same speed. Truthfully, the pace between the two teams in qualifying is relatively close. So far, Mercedes has a 12-point lead in the Constructors Championship.
"There are going to be circuits that suit Mercedes, and there'll be circuits that suit us I think over the next phase of this championship."
"[We're] qualifying within a tenth. We seem to have a tenth, maybe two-tenths advantage in the race, I would say at this venue. So we need to make sure we grab every opportunity. Today we did that under massive pressure, but it was great to get our eight win of the year."Christian Horner
Mercedes is not the heavy favorite anymore
Since 2014, Mercedes has won at least 11 races in each season. Last year, Mercedes' W11 car won in 13 out of 16 races. The sport will remember the W11 car as one of the most dominant in history. However, despite its processor's dominance, the W12 met its superior.
"You can see between the teams; there is just nothing in-between. The first three cars lapped everybody else, and that shows the level that is necessary to deploy in order to win these championships. In the execution of the race itself, we just need to be; it needs the A-game to win the A-championship."Toto Wolff
The Formula 1 season is resuming next weekend on a legendary track in Italy - Monza. The 2020 edition of the race was one of the season's best races, with Pierre Gasly securing his maiden F1 victory. Surely, Max Verstappen will try his best to win his first race at Monza.
