Pop superstar Rihanna prepares to dazzle the animated world as she assumes the iconic role of Smurfette.

Paramount Animation announced their live-action hybrid feature of “The Smurfs Movie” at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas. The multi-talented singer will not only voice the beloved character but also create original songs and produce the project. The movie will be in theatres on February 14, 2025.

Rihanna surprised attendees at CinemaCon, the annual convention of movie theater owners held in Las Vegas. She shared the stage with Paramount Animation head Ramsey Naito to announce her involvement in “The Smurfs Movie.” The singer joked about initially vying for the role of Papa Smurf before confirming her part as Smurfette.

The film, exploring identity, asks, “What is a Smurf?” and, with Rihanna, promises a fresh take on beloved characters. The last time Rihanna was in an animated film, the superstar voiced ‘Tip’ in DreamWorks’ animated feature “Home.” That film grossed over $380 million at the worldwide box office. Rihanna has often graced the screen in films such as Ocean’s 8, Battleship, and Guava Island.

“The Smurfs Movie” is based on the popular comic book series created by Belgian artist Peyo. The little blue creatures first graced the big screen in a modern film franchise by Sony Pictures over a decade ago. Director Raja Gosnell helmed two live-action hybrid films featuring a star-studded voice cast, including Julia Roberts, Katy Perry, Hank Azaria, and Joe Manganiello, with Neil Patrick Harris in a live-action role.

Pam Brady penned the script for the upcoming Smurfs adventure, and Chris Miller will direct the film. In addition to “The Smurfs Movie,” Paramount Animation’s upcoming slate boasts several highly anticipated projects, such as Seth Rogen’s take on “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” a new escapade for “SpongeBob Squarepants,” and another installment of the popular “Paw Patrol” series.

Fans of both Rihanna and the Smurfs will undoubtedly be eager to see how this collaboration unfolds when the film makes its Valentine’s Day debut in 2025.
