Disney officially announced that they purchased a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games, eventually leading to a surprising partnership with Fortnite and allowing them to build their own universe within the game.
The information was shared by none other than Disney’s CEO himself, Bob Iger. It happened last Wednesday during Disney’s earnings call in the first quarter of 2024.
“In addition to being a world-class games experience and interoperating with Fortnite, the new persistent universe will offer a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters, and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and more.”Disney on their collaboration with Fortnite
The announcement also confirmed that everything would be built with Unreal Engine.
Thus, Fortnite players will find themselves in one of the most amazing crossovers of their lives due to this multi-year project.
Even Tim Sweeney, CEO and Founder of Epic Games, is excited about this collaboration. He expressed his excitement and gratitude for Disney. Apparently, they were the “first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite.”
The teaser showed three new maps covering into one main island at the center. These islands bear the designs of Wreck-It-Ralph, Toy Story, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Nightmare Before Christmas.
Previous Fortnite Collaborations
This isn’t the first time Epic Games has done a huge collaboration. Just recently, Fortnite celebrated its partnership with Lego. It featured an entirely separate game within Fortnite where players get to craft, build, plant seeds, and even pet adorable animals.
Additionally, a Marvel-themed season made its debut in the game back in 2020.
For now, Fortnite players are mostly excited about the upcoming Mandalorian update mixed with the epicness of Rocket League.
Overall, around 30 million gamers are playing the game daily. Fortnite also received multiple Game Awards over the years, such as “Best Ongoing Game” and “Best Multiplayer Game.”
