Many users wonder “Is GTA 5 Crossplay?” I used to wonder about it, too, but the answer disappointed me.
GTA 5 (Grand Theft Auto) and its multiplayer counterpart, GTA Online, are two of the biggest games in the world. That also means that people who want to play, especially with their friends, must coordinate to play the game together.
Does GTA Online Have Crossplay?
Sadly, Grand Theft Auto Online doesn’t have crossplay yet. Despite being out for over a decade and its immense popularity, GTA’s Online cross-platform dream still has yet to arrive on console and PC.
While it may not have cross-platform play, there’s still a tiny possibility. However, I wouldn’t bet on it, but one can still have hope.
Does GTA 5 Have Crossplay?
The single-player experience of Rockstar Games’ latest entry into the franchise doesn’t have multiplayer support, and it most likely won’t have one in the future. This means that GTA 5 doesn’t and will likely not have crossplay.
Fret not; like with many other game issues, modders are here to save the day. While it’s not officially supported, you can find a multiplayer mod for the GTA 5 story on Google. However, it’s very janky, and it’s probably not changing.
At least you can try it with your friend. The degrees of success will vary as this is only a fan workaround, though.
Can Xbox Series X Play With Xbox One Or PlayStation 5 With PlayStation 4?
Yes! You can run the older generation GTA 5 on your newer console to play with your friends with last-generation machines. PlayStation players can’t play with Xbox players and vice-versa.
However, at least you can play with your Xbox One friends if you have an Xbox Series S | X. Similarly, PlayStation 5 players can play with their PlayStation 4 friends.
Important note: You’ll have to run the older version of GTA 5 using backward compatibility to be able to play with older machines. In other words, you won’t be able to play the GTA 5: Enhanced Edition with your friends.
Luckily, there’s at least cross-generation crossplay, right?
Will GTA 5 And GTA Oline Ever Get Crossplay?
The chances are slim to none. While I won’t stop you from hoping for a crossplay feature, it’s most likely not happening as adding cross-platform support would be difficult, tedious and not worth their money.
The fact that GTA 6 is only a year away from release means that many, if not all, of Rockstar’s workers are focusing on that game. This removes work and manpower from GTA 5 and GTA Online to finalize their 2025 release.
Furthermore, there’s no reason for Rockstar to add crossplay, as it won’t increase their sales. If it does, it’ll only be negligible, as those who want to play GTA Online are already doing it. I highly doubt thousands of people are holding off on buying the game due to being unable to play with their friends through crossplay.
Hackers In GTA Online
Additionally, allowing crossplay will let many PC hackers into console lobbies. The issue is that the console is much harder to hack and mod on. If these hackers come in, they’ll wreak havoc and ruin players’ experience.
Or worse, they’ll give out free money. “But we love free money!” I hear you exclaim. Of course you do, I do too. However, Rockstar doesn’t. They have much of their revenue from their Shark Cards, the premium digital currency you can exchange for millions of dollars in GTA Online. If they let hackers in, that means fewer people will buy shark cards due to having a surplus of cash.
Despite the trend of different games like Apex Legends, Rocket League, Minecraft, Call of Duty: Warzone, Fortnite, Diablo 4, Warframe and others, GTA online cross-platform most likely won’t join the bandwagon. This means different platforms will stay separate. Your online character will be limited to what machine you’re playing on, and various consoles must remain in their lane.
The farthest you can go is only cross-generation play. Look on the bright side; at least PC players won’t have to worry about playing against aim-assist.
The gaming community will have to accept that everyone will have to stay on their respective platforms.
