A severe blow came for the Los Angeles Lakers today, as Rajon Rondo is injured and expected to miss significant time. Rondo suffered the hand injury during practice this past Sunday and was later diagnosed with a fractured thumb. The expected recovery time is 6-8 weeks.
The Lakers will feel Rondo’s absence. LeBron James did play the point guard role for most of the season, but Rondo was a key contributor nonetheless. On the year, the Kentucky alum was averaging 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists on 48% shooting.
Without Rondo in the lineup, the Lakers may have to look into picking up a new player.
Interestingly enough, one player has presented himself for the opportunity, and it’s someone we are all too familiar with.
Mario Chalmers’ career is defined by his tenure with the Miami Heat. Throughout that stretch, he won two championships alongside the Heat’s big three.
If we know one thing about Chalmers, its that he knows how to play with LeBron. He certainly has the hardware to back that up.
The only question would be whether or not Chalmers could produce at a similar level to his prime with Miami. Mario is 34 years old, and certainly hasn’t been making headlines in recent years.
For the Lakers, they are low on options. There aren’t a whole lot of other players ready to go for the summer, so Chalmers wouldn’t seem like a bad idea.
