LeBron James has been a staple of the NBA playoffs for a little under the past two decades. James’ latest achievement came when he surpassed 7,000 playoff career points. His scoring in the playoffs is significant enough for Reddit user “RecordReviewer” to discover that James has more playoff points than the entire Grizzlies franchise.
The Grizzlies are a relatively new team. Their inaugural season was in 1995 when the NBA expanded the league by adding the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors. Six seasons later, the Grizzlies moved to Memphis.
A majority of the Grizzlies playoff series has been in the “Grit and Grind” era with Mike Conley Sr., Tony Allen, Zach Randolph, and Marc Gasol. They were a defensive first team and pounded the ball inside. The Grizzlies slowed the pace down, leading to slower games.
The newness of the team, combined with the fact that they’ve only made the playoffs ten times in their history compared to LeBron’s 14 appearances, makes the stat not that big of a surprise. Additionally, teams with LeBron usually make deep runs into the playoffs and finals, meaning more games played. James has competed in 45 series, not including 2020, while the Grizzlies have participated in 14.
As LeBron’s career comes to a close and the Grizzlies core of Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Dillon Brooks, and Brandon Clarke grow, they are bound to put up some points for the young Grizzlies franchise and overtake LeBron’s point total.
The sheer fact LeBron James has more playoff points than an entire franchise is astounding, but in reality, James has participated in a lot more playoff games than the Grizzlies.
