Per Shams Charania, LeBron James will keep his last name on his jersey. This decision comes in light of the NBA permitting players to rep certain social justice messages on their backs, instead of their names.
Per usual, twitter had a field day reacting to this news. To many, James’ decision was a major surprise. For years LeBron has been at the forefront of many social justice issues, especially when it comes to the Black Lives Matter movement.
Just this past 4th of July, King James posted a lengthy heartfelt message on his Instagram, expressing why he felt the holiday revealed the “gross injustice and cruelty” towards African-Americans.
With only a handful of other players committing to keeping their normal jerseys, James’ decision is even more strange. However, James in still in full support of those who chose otherwise.
“I commend anyone that decides to put something on the back of their jersey,” James said, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
In a zoom call with the media, LeBron James gave some insight into his reasoning.
“It’s just something that didn’t seriously resonate with my mission, with my goal. I would have loved to have a say so on what would have went on the back of my jersey. I had a couple things in mind but I wasn’t part of that process and that’s OK“.
The NBA restart is scheduled for July 30th.
