After 266 days, the longest stretch without an MLB game in history, baseball finally made its much-anticipated return last night. Baseball is back!
After a global pandemic put the sports world on hold, baseball became the first of the four major sports leagues to return last night.
Yankees vs. Nationals
To start the 2020 MLB season, the New York Yankees took on the reigning World Series champions.
Prior to the game, Dr. Anthony Fauci threw the ceremonial first pitch, where he seemed to be socially distancing from the strike zone.
Officials called the game in the sixth inning due to lightning, and the Yankees defeated the Nationals 4-1.
Giancarlo Stanton started the game off with a home run, and despite the loss, Max Scherzer had a solid pitching performance with 11 strikeouts and 4 earned runs over 5.1 IP.
Giants vs. Dodgers
In the second game of two on the night, the rebuilding San Francisco Giants visited Dodger Stadium to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Prior to the game, Mookie Betts took a kneel during the National Anthem with the likes of Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger showing their support for him.
In his first game with the Dodgers, Betts went 1-5. Kike Hernandez had himself a game going 4-5 at the plate with 5 RBI. Dustin May, who got the Opening Day nod after Clayton Kershaw was placed on the IL, allowed only 1 ER and struck out 4 over 4.1 IP.
