Kolten Wong Generating Interest on Open Market

Former St. Louis Cardinals’ second baseman Kolten Wong is generating interest from multiple teams on the open market. Wong, 30, became a free agent last week when the Cardinals declined his $12.5 million option.

Wong has played all eight seasons of his career in St. Louis and won a Gold Glove award in 2019. The Cardinals declining his contract was surprising considering he hit .265 last season to go along with a .350 OBP.

Wong has never been exceptional on the offensive end, lingering around the average mark for most of his career. As his Gold Glove shows, though, he’s well above average on the defensive end.

Whichever team ends up pursuing the second basemen will likely be making a great investment. They’ll likely be able to get him for relatively cheap, and they’ll be getting a top tier middle infielder on defense.

Los Angeles Angels Showing Interest

One of the teams rumored to be interested in Kolten Wong is the Los Angeles Angels.

LA currently has a few different players rotating the second base position. Wong would certainly be an upgrade for the Angels.

Despite the club’s interest in the free agent, it’s unlikely they seriously pursue him.

Los Angeles’ No. 1 priority this offseason has to be their starting pitching. The franchise currently has a fragile starting rotation and will need to improve it if they’re hoping to be a playoff team.

LA is likely to spend their money this off-season on pitching.

Cubs Could Be a Viable Fit For Wong

Although there have been no legitimate rumors involving the Chicago Cubs and Kolten Wong, the two parties make sense.

The Cubs current 2B, David Bote, had a subpar offensive season last season. Posting a .200 AVG and .305 OBP last season, Wong would be a touch up on the offensive end — and there’s no question he’d be an upgrade on defense.
