Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz will star in an upcoming UFC movie called “Strawweight.”

The film is about two UFC fighters—one on the way up (Moretz) and the other trying to reclaim her old throne (Nyong’o). Both want respect but only one is going to be the champion.

Other than the two protagonists, no casting decisions have been announced yet. It’s also unknown at the moment whether Strawweight will play exclusively in theaters or on streaming platforms.

The movie also features the directorial debut of James M. Johnston, a movie producer and a second unit director for films such as “The Green Knight” and “The Old Man and the Gun.” Paul Harrill wrote the script and Lars Knudsen of Square Peg is the film’s producer.

For non-MMA fans, “strawweight” is a weight class in the UFC. The strawweight limit in the organization is 115 pounds and the lightest of the four women’s divisions in the UFC.

Interestingly, the decision-makers have tapped former UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas as a fight consultant. “Thug Rose” will also serve as an executive producer for the film.

Namajunas battled for the first-ever UFC strawweight championship and lost to Carla Esparza in 2014. She challenged Joanna Jędrzejczyk in 2017 and won, reigning the division until 2019.

Other UFC/MMA Movies

Evidently, “Strawweight” is not the first UFC or MMA-themed movie conceived. In 2016, critics poorly received the performances of Miesha Tate, Holly Holm, and Cris “Cyborg” Santos in Fight Valley.

For people who want something lighter, Here Comes the Boom starring Kevin James and Salma Hayek will do just that. James plays Scott Voss, a high school biology teacher who was forced to fight MMA to save a colleague’s job. It didn’t take long before the UFC noticed Voss’ rise in the regional circuits and offered him a fight.

For more serious movie buffs, Bruised, starring Halle Berry, might be your cup of tea. The Satellite Awards chose the film as the 2022 Best New Feature. Bruised is still streaming on Netflix.
