The 2021-22 season hasn’t gone as hoped for the Los Angeles Lakers. Having made arguably the biggest move in the offseason by acquiring Russell Westbrook, many were curious about the fit but still expected dominance. However, it hasn’t turned out that way to start. With a 10-11 record a quarter way through, they don’t resemble a championship-caliber team right now. An anonymous rival executive gave a brief account of why that has been the case.

“Theyre old and they cant stay in front of anyone.”

Simplistic as it sounds, it does have some truth to it. The Lakers are ranked 20th in the league in defensive rating. Part of their defensive woes correlates to the roster composition, which entails multiple older players. Another vital issue pertains to health. LeBron James has already missed time due to injury this season. And considering the history behind Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis, that problem may persist throughout the year.

Another challenge facing the Lakers concerns the team’s offensive identity. The combined talents of Anthony Davis, Lebron James, and Russell Westbrook are overwhelming. That said, within the confines of a group like this, one should wonder if that trio could make do.

Impending changes?

The Lakers have earned a bevy of criticism for their performance this season. In comparison to their lofty expectations, the results have aired disappointment for LA. While we remain in the early ongoings of the season, they can still turn things around. However, if things don’t change relatively soon, we should expect some drastic changes to recoup their championship aspirations.

Now, what does that entail exactly? There’s no guarantee that they could move Russell Westbrook’s contract. On top of that, beyond their stars, they don’t boost many favorable assets for a potential trade. One could even look at the coaching staff as a candidate for changes. No matter how they decide to go about themselves from here, they have to find a resolve soon. With the Suns and Warriors dominating like top contenders, the pressure mounts all the more for the Los Angeles Lakers.
