Even after the NBA season has tipped off for 2021, Ben Simmons is still all over headlines around the league. The disgruntled point forward has no desire to continue working for the Philadelphia 76ers. After serving his suspension for the team’s season-opener, Ben Simmons skipped a workout today, October 21. And now, reports state that he is not mentally ready to play for Philly.

Coming into today

This offseason was a whirlwind that spun countless trade ideas to send the back-to-back NBA All-Defensive 1st Team member out of Philadelphia. Simmons seemingly played his last game as a 76er before he returned to the team. Monday, October 11, Simmons surprised the team by showing up at their Wells Fargo Arena. He returned before the team’s preseason contest against the Brooklyn Nets, though not to play.

Then, Ben Simmons returned to practice for the Philadelphia 76ers that week. That was until Head Coach Doc Rivers kicked Simmons out of practice. Then, on October 19, Simmons refused to join the team for a defensive drill multiple times, so Rivers suggested Simmons leave the practice.

“Doc Rivers asked Ben Simmons to join a defensive drill today. Simmons refused. Rivers asked again. Simmons said no again. Rivers then told Simmons he should go home, and Simmons dropped the ball and left.”

Perhaps not even hours after this incident, the team suspended Simmons for the team’s season-opener. His superstar teammate Joel Embiid even responded to Simmons’ attitude while they shared the court at practice together.

“But at the end of the day, our job is not to babysit somebody… We don’t get paid to come out here and try to babysit somebody… And I’m sure my teammates feel that way.”

Today, several reports have come out regarding Ben Simmons’s activities with the team and his future. First, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that he showed at the 76ers practice facility today. Then, however, Ben Simmons skipped a workout for the team. Although, he was experiencing some back tightness, possibly explaining his absence.

“All-Star Ben Simmons arrived and departed the 76ers practice facility today without taking part in a scheduled individual workout. His status for Friday night’s game vs. Brooklyn (ESPN, 7:30 PM) is unclear. As a team, the Sixers had no practice today. Simmons has yet to fully engage in a team practice, so it remains unlikely that he would make his season-debut vs. the Nets on Friday.”

Adrian Wojnarowski

Just an hour after Wojnarowski’s initial report, Shams Charania reported that Ben Simmons is not mentally prepared to play basketball for the 76ers. He would also go on to confirm that Simmons would miss the 76ers upcoming contest against the Nets.

“76ers All-Star Ben Simmons is currently not mentally ready to play for the team and was receiving treatment on his back today due to ramp up process. He will miss Friday’s home opener vs Nets and is not expected to play for an undetermined period of time.”

The most recent update we have, though, is one from Wojnarowski again. The latest report states that the 76ers were still hoping that Ben Simmons could potentially join the team for shootaround. Simmons is also going to talk about his playing future with the team tomorrow.

“All-Star guard Ben Simmons is expected to come early to the 76ers shootaround on Friday morning to discuss his playing status with organizational leadership, sources tell ESPN. Sixers play the Nets on ESPN and team is still hopeful that Simmons will participate in shootaround.”

Adrian Wojnarowski

Ben Simmons and his future in Philly is a situation that every NBA fan is waiting to come to an end. Simmons doesn’t want to play for the team again, but it is ultimately out of his control. It is the most interesting story going into the season, and we will be watching it closely.
