Bulls Fire Head Coach Jim Boylen

The Chicago Bulls have parted ways with Jim Boylen. After producing a poor record of 39-84, management has decided to move on from their current coach.

The team released a statement regarding the firing of Boylen. Arturas Karnisovas, Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations, had this to say.

“After doing a comprehensive evaluation and giving the process the time it deserved, I ultimately decided that a fresh approach and evolution in leadership was necessary. This was a very difficult decision, but it is time for our franchise to take that next step as we move in a new direction and era of Chicago Bulls basketball. Jim is a great human being that cares deeply about this organization and the game of basketball. I want to thank him for his professionalism and commitment to the franchise.”

Boylen led the Bulls to a record of 22-43 this past season. Despite the losing record, the team showed glimpses of promise throughout this run, especially on the defensive end. It was his tainted relationship with the players that made his departure inevitable.

Poor Relationship With Players

Boylen was on the hot seat in Chicago for much of this season. His players disliked his coaching style, and would visually disparage him during games. Zach Lavine, who averaged 25.5 points this season, often butted heads with coach Boylen. Lavine made his frustrations known quite publicly.

The Bulls did not make the cut for the 22-team restart in Orlando. Their front office has made it abundantly clear that the search for their next head coach will be thorough. Amongst the names speculated to be in contention is Toronto assistant Adrian Griffin.

Due to the potential financial hit the NBA will sustain next season, many speculated that Boylen would remain head coach for the 2020-2021 campaign. He’s on a team-friendly contract – a guaranteed $1 million – and Chicago only recently extended it. But as it turns out, the Bulls viewed him as too big a risk to hold on to.
