Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is making a statement tonight against the Atlanta Hawks. The superstar is repping a hand-painted pair of custom sneakers that depict Bruce Lee – a martial arts icon and equal rights activist – to show solidarity with the Asian community amid a recent uptick in anti-Asian hate crimes.

Curry contacted the Bruce Lee Foundation following shootings at three Atlanta-area Asian spas last month. They plan to auction off the game-worn sneakers and then donate the proceeds to the eight victims’ families.

Curry told The Undefeated that the shootings made him feel “disgust, horror, and outright anger at why any violence keeps happening in our country.”

The custom sneakers were painted by Kreative Custom Kicks and took almost 12 hours to complete. Along with Lee and his family, the design features one of Curry’s favorite Lee quotes: “Under the heavens, there is but one family.”

“It’s plain and simple. We are all different and unique on purpose. But we are all human beings on a quest to fulfill our purpose. [We should use] that energy to uplift and love each other to the fullest. Anything else is a waste of our existence.”

Curry’s Activism

Curry is a two-time MVP and a three-time champion. However, arguably his biggest societal contributions come off the court. In addition to backing the Asian community, he has shown support for both the Black Lives Matter movement and the fight for gender equality. Curry applies Lee’s philosophy to all of his social activism.

“[I’m looking to] honor Bruce Lee and his continued influence and impact on today, but also shine a light on the work that needs to be done to bring all of us together – no matter what our background is,” Curry said. “We have it in us, but it’s on all of us to make that reality happen. Spread love, joy, optimism, and positivity always.”
