In game 3 of the Clippers-Mavericks series, tempers were flaring. Montrezl Harrell exclaimed, “B*tch A** White Boy” in the direction of Luka Doncic. Although most national pundits glossed over Harrell’s callous remarks, ESPN’s Jay Williams lamented his outburst. He reminded him of our society’s current climate.
“Damn, Montrez… I can only imagine if Luka Doncic had said something like that to you and it got caught on tape. I can only imagine with the Black Lives Matter how much of a big deal that would’ve been considering today’s climate and state. Would’ve been a massive story. Luka would’ve lost all credibility in this face. Everybody would have been commenting on it. We would ask LeBron about it, we would ask Kawhi about it. Everybody would’ve had some kind of statement about it. But it’s not that big of a story because Trez said it to a caucasian person.
Williams isn’t advocating for the eradication of trash talking. He wants players to be aware that there’s a fine line between that and bigotry. The former No. 2 overall pick knows Harrell is better than this and wants him to let his game do the talking.
The Clippers and Mavericks have no love lost between them. Through three games, the series has had its fair share of confrontations, trash talk, and ejections. Harrell’s comments came after Doncic berated him for flopping.
Los Angeles leads the series two games to one. Game four is on Sunday.
