Hayward’s wife, Robyn, is due to give birth sometime in September. This means that Hayward could miss some of the Conference semifinals, and potentially even the Conference finals. Any player who has informed the league that he will league the bubble can re-enter with a small amount of hassle. If they test negative for COVID 19 every day that they are outside of the bubble, they can rejoin their teams after four days of quarantine.
Consequences for the Celtics in the NBA Bubble?
This news is huge for the Celtics. Hayward was playing his best basketball since his injury this season. He was averaging 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. Furthermore, he was doing this with tremendous splits of 50% from the field and 39% from deep. Hayward is a key contributor to the team, and the Celtics’ chances of winning games while he is out will be severely weakened.
As for Conley, his wife’s due date is currently set for August 27th. This is towards the end of the first round. Given the quarantine period on return, Conley may not be available again until round two. This is of course contingent on whether the Jazz make it out of the first round.
Utah is not viewed as the contender that Boston is.
Conley was expected to take on a large role for Utah in the NBA bubble, due to Bojan Bogdanovic opting to sit out. The Jazz’s chances of advancing to the second round could be severely hindered without two of their top players.
Players like Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchel will now have an increased load to carry.
