Former champion Iman Shumpert won another title, but it wasn’t on the hardwood. And it wasn’t the Larry O’Brien Trophy. He became the first NBA player to win the Mirrorball Trophy on ABC’s hit show “Dancing With The Stars.”
“Team DanIman” defeated child star JoJo Siwa and partner Jenna Johnson. Many believed that Siwa was the heavy favorite due to her immense popularity and dancing background. However, Shumpert and partner Daniella Karagach’s “Lose Control” dance freestyle put them over the top.
DWTS is in its 30th season. The popular show partners dance professionals with celebrities, athletes, and musicians. Iman Shumpert joins NFL running back Emmitt Smith, Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez and NFL wide receiver Hines Ward as the only professional athletes to win the competition.
Shumpert didn’t have any dancing experience heading into the contest. On the other hand, he’s married to singer-songwriter, director, dancer, and choreographer Teyana Taylor. Her advice to Shumpert was to simply “sell it!”
A solid NBA career
Iman Shumpert played in the NBA for 10 years with five different teams. He won a championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. The Cavs historically overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors. Shumpert’s intense defense frustrated Steph Curry in the 4th quarter of Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
Will his “Dancing With The Stars” victory lead to another NBA comeback attempt? Teams often bolster their rosters before the playoffs. Shumpert may garner interest due to his ability to defend the perimeter. He played for the Brooklyn Nets last year.
Iman Shumpert let former teammate Lebron James know that he’d be available to play for the Los Angeles Lakers once “Dancing With The Stars” was over. For now, Shumpert is happy with adding another trophy to his collection.
