In year three, Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant has already made his mark on the NBA. But his interests aren’t limited to basketball, as his recent quote tweet illustrates. After rapper Lil Baby put out a tweet teasing his release of a new song tonight, Morant responded.

“Should I drop a song tonight or just wait on the album ??”

Morant encouraged the Atlanta-based rapper to drop his new song as soon as possible.

“Tonight.”

Connection between industries

This connection between a basketball player and a rap artist is nothing new in the world of pop culture. Famous rappers like Drake, J Cole, Jay Z, and Jack Harlow are familiar faces at NBA games and have developed relationships with several players.

Much of the same is true for Lil Baby, who participated in a charity game during the 2021 all-star weekend alongside Harlow, Quavo, and 2 Chainz. He even befriended Nets superstar James Harden, as the duo met up in Paris over the summer.

On top of that, Morant’s a familiar face in the hip-hop world as well. J Cole shouted him out in a song titled,

“m y . l i f e,” and Lil Wayne called him a “dog” in 2020.

It’s easy to see why he’s earned that recognition. Morant, the 2020 Rookie of the Year, is one of the most exciting young players in the sport, generating countless highlight plays even when he’s missing dunks.

As a 22-year old, he’s averaging 24.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 6.8 assists this season for the Memphis Grizzlies. Barring anything unexpected, he should capture his first career all-star appearance this year.

Morant will look to continue his all-star bid tonight at home versus the Oklahoma City Thunder. Time will tell if he’ll be able to listen to a new Lil Baby song afterward.
