Jerry Colangelo does not appear to be a fan of Kevin Love right now. The longtime USA Basketball managing executive spoke a bit on Love's time with the team before he withdrew himself. Colangelo did not mince words in his address.

“I didn’t think Kevin Love was gonna play. I wasn’t even sure he had much left to play. He reached out to us and said he was in shape and said he felt he owed us. And on the basis of that, we’re looking at someone with international experience who at one time was a heck of a rebounder and could still shoot the ball. You know, being like a 12th man on a roster. Well, it didn’t work out. He wasn’t in shape. And he was way behind as it turned out. So you move on. Call it a mistake." Jerry Colangelo

Kevin Love reportedly cited a nagging calf injury as the reason for his withdrawal from the team. However, given this quote from Jerry Colangelo, it seems that the team wished to part ways with Love anyway. Both he and Bradley Beal left the team days before they left for the Olympics in Tokyo. Beal's departure came as a result of safety protocols following contact tracing to the coronavirus. In their place came three-time NBA champion JaVale McGee and Spurs forward Keldon Johnson.

As the summer Olympics basketball tournament goes along, Team USA will continue its hunt for gold. They play against the Czech Republic on Saturday.

Kevin Love Today

The comments from Jerry Colangelo only add to the disheartening narrative surrounding Kevin Love. The former all-star has spent the bulk of the last few years whittling away on a rebuilding Cavaliers team. As his value on the open market declined, he stays in a rather dissatisfying situation. On a few occasions, he has shown his frustrations with it all.

While Cleveland has sought a trade partner, teams have proved unwilling to absorb Love's bloated contract. He stands to make about $60M in the next two seasons. Recent reports suggest that the Cavaliers may willingly part with Collin Sexton to entice a buyer for Love's deal. Such an idea harkens back to prior reports expressing that the team doubts Sexton's viability as a franchise player.

At this point, the has been no traction on a Kevin Love trade. While he waits, the Cavaliers continue to revamp their roster with the addition of more young talent in last night's NBA draft.
