Kelly Oubre Jr. will be an unrestricted free agent this summer after playing the last season with the Golden State Warriors. When asked about what kind of system he thinks would be the best fit he mentioned a defensive team. He wants an organization with a defensive culture and went on to mention a team with a championship culture.
"A highly emphasized defensive culture. A championship-winning culture. Being able to emphasize turning defense into offense and team basketball. A spread open floor, size, versatility. Things like that."Kelly Oubre Jr.
He knows a lot of teams are headed in that direction, but didn't mention any organizations in particular. Oubre Jr. feels he could "seamlessly fit" into any of those organizations. He also emphasized his own two-way prowess in the interview with Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, saying that those very skills set him apart from other free agents this summer.
"I’d say my youth, my two-way ability on offense and defense. I’m not one-dimensional. Passion. Leadership skills."Kelly Oubre Jr. on what separates him from other free agents"
Last year in Golden State Oubre Jr. averaged 15 points and 6 rebounds a game with the Warriors. He was never really able to fit into what the team was trying to do, possibly because he missed time with injuries. Along with Andrew Wiggins, he took on the big defensive assignments for the Warriors all year. That ability is something that other teams will be thinking about in free agency.
He is apparently looking for a contact in the range of $20 million a year. This will put him in the middle tier of free agents this year, in between a max deal, and fitting into an exception. This makes him a desirable pick up for teams who feel they are one piece away from contention. The defense and intensity he brings is very valuable to a team like that; he said so himself.
