NBA Hall of Famer and current Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing has tested positive for coronavirus. The former New York Knicks center is currently under care and isolated at his local hospital.
“I want to share that I have tested positive for COVID-19. This virus is serious and should not be taken lightly. I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and take care of yourselves and your loved ones,” Hall of Famer posted on his official Twitter account.
Ewing decided to share the news publicly to “emphasize that this virus can affect anyone,” according to the statement. He is the only member of the Georgetown men’s basketball program to have tested positive for the coronavirus.
Ewing retired in 2002, after 17 seasons in the NBA. The 11x NBA All-Star averaged 21 points and 9.8 rebounds throughout his career. No. 1 pick in the 1985 NBA Draft also won two gold medals with Olympic Team – in 1984 and 1992. For the past three years he has been a head coach of his former college team – the Georgetown Hoyas.
Ewing was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008 and his no. 33 was retired by New York Knicks.
