Following a disappointing first-round playoff exit, Kyle Kuzma seems ready to move on from the Lakers. He is reportedly searching for a different team with a bigger role.
Kuzma played poorly and was subject to widespread criticism throughout the series. He averaged just 6.3 points per game on 29% shooting across 6 games.
After the series, trade memes and rumors spread regarding the Lakers forward. The rumors swirled even more when Kuzma changed his Instagram bio to just “NBA Champion.” He previously had the Lakers in his bio but removed the team as of June 19.
After winning the 2020 NBA Finals, Los Angeles failed to get past the Suns, led by Chris Paul and Devin Booker. After superstar Anthony Davis’ injury, the Lakers failed to step up in his absence. Left with only one half of their dynamic duo in LeBron James, they fell in 6 games.
ESPN’s Marc Spears joined The Jump to discuss the situation and seemed to think Kuzma is ready for a new team.
“[Kyle Kuzma] has been in this LA bubble, he’s behind LeBron, I think he’s ready for a new start with a bigger opportunity.”Marc Spears
Spears previously hinted at Kuzma’s potential departure, saying that the forward had a chance to be involved in a trade with Kemba Walker. However, Walker arrived in Oklahoma City in exchange for Al Horford and several other assets.
In the long term, Kuzma changing his bio may not be of any importance. However, given his current reputation amongst Lakers fans and recent play, he may be out of Los Angeles soon.
Since his selection in the 2017 NBA draft, Kuzma established himself in LA as a widely streaky player. In his first 2 seasons, he averaged 16 then 18.7 points a game. However, after the arrival of LeBron and Anthony Davis, his production dropped drastically. In the past 2 seasons, he averaged just 13 points.
