The Lakers have plenty to worry about right now as they’ve fallen behind 3-2 to the Phoenix Suns. Something the Lakers may not have to worry about, however, is re-signing fan-favorite Alex Caruso. According to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer,
“there is a sense among Lakers officials that Caruso has relished supporting James and has an interest in staying in Los Angeles to compete alongside the four-time MVP.”Jake Fischer
It’s no secret the two love playing together, and it seems it may be enough to keep Alex Caruso in a Lakers uniform. In May 2020, Alex Caruso joined fellow Lakers’ teammate Jared Dudley on Instagram Live for a Q &A. During the live stream, he described how he and James are similar.
“But I think me and him have a; you have the same thought process too, we’re just head basketball players. Like you know spacing, you know defensive awareness, you know guys’ tendencies. I feel like me, and him just have a connection of understanding the game.”Alex Caruso
The Lakers hold Caruso’s bird rights, meaning they will be able to pay him up to a max deal. While it’s doubtful they would ever pay him the max, the price is likely to be $10 million to $12 million. The question now will be how many teams will try and sign him away from the Lakers for more money.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, they have a lot of free agents they’ll need to navigate. Dennis Schroeder, Wesley Matthews, Markieff Morris, and Andre Drummond will all be major considerations for a Lakers team that could be looking for answers if they get bounced in the first round.
With LeBron and Caruso sharing one of the highest net ratings in the NBA in the past few seasons and sharing their personal connection, it seems likely Alex Caruso will be in a Lakers uniform again next year. It will largely come down to how much teams want to outbid them in the end.
