DeMar DeRozan could be on his way home for the 2021-22 NBA season. The Los Angeles Lakers have an interest in pursuing the 31-year old in the offseason. Moreover, DeRozan is entering this summer's market as an unrestricted free agent.
Evan Massey stated a sign-and-trade might be needed in the deal. The Lakers' picks and assets could potentially be on the move to acquire the California native.
In his third season with the San Antonio Spurs, he averaged 21.6 points, 6.9 assists, and 4.2 rebounds. He was the team's main contributor, playing in 61 games this season. The Spurs finished tenth in the Western Conference, missing the postseason for the second consecutive year.
Los Angeles will have eleven free agents in the market during the offseason. Dennis Schroder, Andre Drummond and, Markieff Morris are among the most notable UFA's for the Lakers. Adding a player with the skill set of DeRozan would boost the team's talent. The Lakers, 42-30, are coming off a first-round defeat against the Phoenix Suns, losing six games.
DeRozans' LA History
The connection between DeRozan and the Lakers has been evident for several years. The speculations began when he played for the Toronto Raptors, leading up to the eventual trade to the Spurs. In a similar position last season, he commented on the Lakers' interest after the 2019-20 season on Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson's All The Smoke podcast.
“So to be wanted by a championship team that just came off a championship, to see that, how could you not feel some type of way? Especially me, being from L.A., it’s like ‘damn, my hometown team want me? They just came off a championship and they want me?’ It’s definitely crazy to be able to see that, but anybody knows that whatever jersey I got on, I’m gonna lay it out there on the line and represent in the best way I can.”DeMar DeRozan on All The Smoke Podcast
