With LeBron James winning his fourth Championship ring, basketball’s GOAT debate is as tense as ever. Many fans are now giving James the edge, but Magic Johnson is putting on the brakes. Johnson recently voiced his view that Michael Jordan is the GOAT. That is despite James attaining both a coveted NBA championship and a Finals MVP trophy.

Magic Johnson acknowledges that LeBron has made gains within the debate, but he still favors Jordan. He recently called Jordan’s career “unmatched at this time” while explaining that LeBron is closer now than ever. “LeBron..put himself in a great position to be at the table,” said Johnson, who was the Lakers’ president of basketball operations when James signed with the team in 2018. Johnson also added, “If [LeBron] gets another one, wow, watch out.”

Magic Johnson’s comments surrounding the GOAT debate always bear some significance, as he is arguably the best basketball player to identify someone other than himself as the winner. The all-time great Kareem Abdul Jabaar, in contrast, publically affirms that “GOAT discussions are fun distractions” and avoids holding an opinion on the subject.
