Veteran point guard Jeff Teague is now a free agent. After joining the Magic due to a 3-team trade with the Celtics and Bulls, the team waived Teague.
Prior to the trade, Teague featured in 34 games this season for the Celtics. The Magic were set to be Teague’s 6th team in his 12-year career, but Orlando waived him long before he had any chance of playing.
Teague previously spent time with the Hawks, Pacers, and Timberwolves before joining the Celtics just last year. Injuries hampered his career starting in 2018 when his production dropped significantly. Formerly a consistent scoring option averaging 13-16 points per game, he is now averaging 6.9 points this season.
Even with the drop in scoring, Teague is still a valuable asset to any team. His veteran presence is a need in many locker rooms around the league. Ultimately, the Magic did not need his services for the future. Evidently, the team is looking to rebuild as they also traded away two of their best players in Nikola Vucevic and Aaron Gordon on deadline day.
Key player Evan Fournier also departed to the Celtics as a part of the trade that landed Teague on the Magic. Signing a 32-year-old Teague would only hamper their plans to rebuild with a younger core.
