NBA legend Wes Unseld has died at the age of 74, according to a statement made by his family, via The Washington Wizards.
He was battling numerous health issues, most recently pneumonia.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce that our adored husband, father, and grandfather Wes Unseld passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his family following lengthy health battles, most recently with pneumonia.”

The Washington Bullets drafted Unseld second overall. He would play the entirety of his 13-year career with the Bullets. He won ROTY and MVP in the same season, accompanying Wilt Chamberlain as the only other player to do so.
Wes was a five-time All-Star and averaged 10.8 points and a staggering 14 rebounds for his career. In 1978 he reached the pinnacle of the NBA, as he won a championship and earned Finals MVP honors. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988.
Unseld was the head coach of the Bullets from 1987-1994 before becoming the GM of the now-Washington Wizards in 1996. He acted as the head of basketball operations for the Wizards until 2000, and then again from 2001-2003.
Unseld’s death will be felt throughout the league. NBA champion Kevin Love – whose middle name is Wesley after Wes Unseld – lamented the passing of the basketball great.
