According to a report, the Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to package Kevin Love or Taurean Prince in a potential Collin Sexton deal. There have been rumors swirling that Sexton's time with the Cavaliers is coming to an end the past several weeks. Cleveland seems intent on trading 22-year-old the rising star, though the asking price is high. This would be a typical salary dump trade, pairing their best asset with trying to get an overpaid player off the books.
"I've heard the Cavs have been trying to pair him (Sexton) with Kevin Love or Taurean Prince to get something decent in return."Terry Pluto
Love is owed $60 million over the next two seasons, and Prince is owed $15 million next season.
During the 2020-21 season, Collin Sexton showed he has exceptionally high potential. He averaged 24.3 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.1 rebounds while shooting 47.5% from the field and 37.1% from deep. He was by far the Cavaliers' best player.
Although he has great potential, there have been concerns from potential suitors. He is a score-first guard, and that is the best element of his game. Teams might be reluctant to bring in a ball-dominant second or third option. He is still very young and has not learned how to win yet.
This past season reports also surfaced that he was not very well-liked in the Cavaliers locker room. Teammates increasingly grew frustrated by the way Sexton "dominates the ball." This could be another reason why they are trying to move on from Sexton.
This is a big offseason for the Cavaliers, who have the third pick in the draft. After making four consecutive NBA Finals (2015-2018) and winning a championship, the Cavaliers have been one of the worst teams in the league. GM Kolby Altman has made questionable personnel decisions over the last couple of years.
Trading Sexton could pay dividends to their rebuild or could miserably backfire as they let a young star slip away.
