NBA Targeting December 22 for 2020-2021 Start Date

After a well-spent couple of months in Orlando, the NBA is already getting ready to come back to action. The two-month bubble of eight games and a normal playoffs schedule seemed to work very well. Commissioner Adam Silver predicts that the 2020-21 season will be able to start on December 22, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Zach Lowe.

The season would be much shorter, around 72 games. That way players can prepare for the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Last month, Silver said, “The goal for us next season is to play a standard season, 82-game season and playoffs. In-home arenas, in front of fans.” Now, the league is planning to move forward with 10 fewer games.

The league also examined the possibility of returning to Orlando for a whole “bubble season.” Of course, it will be much tougher to play a full season in a bubble with all 30 teams, especially away from their families for this long. (The league brought in family members for the playoffs, but it will be tougher for families to be there for six months.)

Silver said that the NBA would like around eight weeks in between the finalization of the schedule and the actual start of the season. Hopefully, Silver can execute these plans as well as he did in the bubble.

The NBA Draft is scheduled for November 18, so rookies would have about one month less than usual to adjust to their new teams. Nevertheless, it is worth it to watch the NBA start in December.
