After 61 days, the New Orleans Pelicans have completed their head coaching search. Stan Van Gundy has agreed to a four-year deal. He will take the helm and become the team’s seventh coach in franchise history, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Andrew Lopez.

The 61-year-old will be bringing 11-years of head coaching experience to the job. His last stint was with the Pistons from 2014-2018. He posted a record of 152-176 and made the playoffs in 2016. Most notably, however, is his tenure with the Magic from 2007-2012. Van Gundy led Orlando to the Finals in 2009 and is lauded for playing an integral part in Dwight Howard’s career.

He spent the last two years gracing the NBA world with his appearances on television and broadcasting. However, he never once ruled out the possibility of a return to coaching. He took to Twitter to express his contentment and appreciation for the job.

Van Gundy’s basketball acumen will surely augment the Pelicans franchise. He is already acclimated with this new era of three-point shooting since he implemented an outside-inside philosophy in Orlando. He can potentially replicate that to a degree with young phenom Zion Williamson.

Van Gundy will seek to lead New Orleans back into the playoffs in a loaded Western Conference.
