The Phoenix Suns have shown no signs of slowing down after their incredible season last year. 17 straight wins later, and parallels are being drawn between the current Suns team and the Spurs dynasty of the 2000s.

It is an interesting comparison with two teams built in a similar manner.

“This looks like the San Antonio Spurs. This Phoenix Suns look like the San Antonio Spurs. That’s who they look like.”

Marcus Spears

Spears compared Chris Paul to Tony Parker regarding how they are both floor generals. He also notes how Deandre Ayton dominates the defensive end like David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Spears also has high praise for Mikal Bridges, comparing him to Bruce Bowen.

“From operations standpoint defensively, it reminded me of how the San Antonio Spurs used to win championships.”

With Stephen A. Smith thinking CP3 is a top-five PG all time if he wins a ring, and that Devin Booker is the closest thing we have ever seen to Kobe Bryant, the tools are there for this team. All of the pieces are there, but the Suns simply have to win titles for the comparison to come true.

This could be the year for the Suns

After falling short to the Milwaukee Bucks last season, Phoenix is in great shape for a postseason run. With the 7th best Offensive Rating at 111.6 and the 2nd best Defensive Rating at 104.0, this team is well-rounded.

With teams like the Lakers, Clippers, and Nuggets struggling, the stars are aligning for the Suns. Phoenix has six players averaging double-figures in the scoring column this year. Headed by the 23.2 PPG scorer Devin Booker, their offense is just as potent as their defense.

They say defense wins championships, but depth, leadership, and experience do not hurt the Suns either. CP3 is hungry for a ring, and this is his best chance for one. The Suns look to push their win streak to 18 tonight against a struggling Detroit team.
