The NBA postponed the Timberwolves game on Monday due to the police killing of Daunte Wright in Minnesota. The game was against the Brooklyn Nets, and the NBA is in talks of rescheduling the game to Tuesday.

“The National Basketball Association announced today that in light of the tragic events in the Minneapolis area yesterday, tonight’s game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center has been postponed.  The decision to postpone was made by the NBA after consultation with the Timberwolves organization and local and state officials. The police officer claimed that Wright tried to evade his arrest. The officer then shot him while he was at a traffic light. According to the police chief, the shooting was accidental. He stated that the officer tried to shoot Wright with a taser instead of a real gun.

Protests are expected to take place on Monday in downtown Minneapolis because of Wright’s death.

Along with the NBA, the NHL decided to postpone the game on Monday between the Minnesota Wild and the St. Louis Blues. The MLB also postponed the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox game.

“Yesterday’s tragic event, involving the life of Daunte Wright, once again leaves our community mourning. After consultation with the League, and local and state officials, we believe postponing tonight’s game versus the Brooklyn Nets is the best decision.”

The tragic killing of Daunte Wright sparks yet another act of police brutality in the United States. The NBA has postponed games in the past due to police brutality, most notably in the NBA bubble. In August 2020, the NBA postponed two nights of basketball games due to the police killing of Jacob Blake.
