Top prospect Makur Maker has committed to Howard University. Here’s how it could change College Basketball going forward.
Earlier this week, Makur Maker became the highest-ranked recruit ever to commit to a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). He committed to Howard, passing up on College Basketball powerhouses UCLA, Memphis, and Kentucky. The impact that this decision could have on the future of College Basketball is massive.
Maker was born in Kenya to South Sudanese parents but grew up in Perth, Western Australia. He first came to the US as a freshman and has moved around a series of Prep Schools in California. He ended up transferring to Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix for his senior year.
Maker could inspire many top recruits in the future to commit to HBCUs. He even stated that his commitment to Howard was fueled by the possibility of sparking change.
Maker’s Statement
The reference to Mikey Williams comes from one of his tweets in early June, where he said, “Going to an HBCU wouldn’t be too bad.”
Williams is one of the most famous players in high school. Maker hopes that success at Howard could convince prospects like Williams to take the HBCU route.
Maker will have his work cut out for him, as he will be joining a team that had a record of 4-29 last year. Leading the Bison’s to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1992 would be an incredible feat.
