It's the end of an era for the Toronto Raptors. As many expected, Kyle Lowry is on his way to South Beach to join the Miami Heat. The two sides subsequently agreed to terms a few minutes into free agency on Monday. Lowry will be signing with the Heat, ending his nine-year career with the Toronto Raptors.
As a result, several Toronto figures took the time to thank Lowry for his time with the Raptors. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to Twitter to show his appreciation for the long-time Raptor:
"Well, it's the end of an era. Thanks for all the memories and moments you gave Canadians, including my own family."
@Klow7 Good luck in Miami, Kyle. #WeTheNorthPrime Minister Justin Trudeau
But Trudeau was not the only political leader to pay his respects to the franchise icon. Mayor John Tory released a heartwarming goodbye to Lowry over Twitter last night:
"Our city has gone through a lot over the past year, but this one really hurts. Kyle Lowry is the Greatest Raptor Of All Time. Everyone knows that...we will always love you, and Toronto will always welcome you. Thank you Kyle Lowry"Mayor John Tory
Drake shows love
However, it wasn't only politicians who showed their appreciation for the veteran. Additionally, superstar artist and Raptors Global Ambassador Drake paid tribute to Lowry on his Instagram Story. In the post, Drake stated that "the city is yours eternally, and we wish you the best in South Beach. We will continue to celebrate you."
Lowry's teammates have yet to speak on his departure. Expect to see farewell messages from them as soon as the trade becomes official. The point guard is the franchise leader in assists and steals and is second on the all-time scoring list. After nine seasons and a championship, Lowry has established himself as a Canadian icon. As a result, he will be sorely missed by fans and teammates alike.
