Blake Griffin finally announced his retirement from basketball on Tuesday afternoon. After sitting in free agency for this season, signs were starting to point in that direction. However, the 35-year-old revealed that he had an offer from the Boston Celtics this season.

Griffin revealed the news and talked about his recent retirement on the latest episode of Pardon My Take.

“I did have sort of a standing offer to go back to Boston. I remember the end of December hit, and I called Brad Stevens, and I was like, ‘Man, I really appreciate it.’ I had communication with him the whole time. I just wasn’t there, man.”

Griffin was on the Celtics roster last year as a veteran and mentor. According to Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, the Celtics ‘begged’ for him to return. Ultimately, Griffin just couldn’t find that same passion.

While Griffin wasn’t the superstar player that he once was while in Boston, it was obvious the team loved having him in the locker room. Now, he will enjoy watching from the sidelines and hopes to see Boston win a title this season.

“Yeah, I mean, if I had gone anywhere, I would’ve gone back to Boston. I love those guys, and I’m pulling for them.”

The forward played 13 years in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers, Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets and lastly the Celtics. Griffin was a six-time All-Star who averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game.

Griffin will not get to enjoy his retirement as the Celtics begin the difficult task of winning a championship. The Celtics will begin their playoff run on April 21st.
