Last week in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, former MVP and two-time champion Kevin Durant had some interesting things to say. He discussed his departure from Golden State and criticized former coach Steve Kerr�s motion offense that was implemented in the Warriors� title runs with Durant.
KD said that the offense �only works to a certain point,� even though that certain point was two NBA championships and three trips to the Finals in as many years.
Durant’s former teammate Stephen Curry chimed in with a response in which he disagreed, telling ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, “Well, I don’t care what plays we ran…We won two championships. We all wanna play iso-ball at the end of the day in some way, shape, or form. But I’d rather have some championships, too.”
These words are no surprise coming from Curry. His unselfish style of play and willingness to buy into the Warriors� collective offensive system made Golden State such a juggernaut for half of the past decade.
Durant also bought into the Warriors� offense for much of his 3-year tenure and thrived with it, so his critiques are slightly surprising. But as good as the system was, it makes sense that Durant would want more isolation opportunities, seeing as he�s one of the most unguardable players in NBA history.
Durant will get his fair share of isolation shots next year with Brooklyn, so fans will see what his words are worth. Meanwhile, Curry and the Warriors will continue their motion offense in what figures to be a bounce-back year next season.
