Dejounte Murray is making headlines all around social media for how well he played against the Boston Celtics. However, he doesn’t want to give himself too much credit as he thinks he didn’t do too well.

Dejounte Murray Played “Awful” According To Himself

The one-time All-Star, like many other great players, saw flaws in the way he played for the Atlanta Hawks last night. Everyone loves a competitive game, and the 27-year-old isn’t any different. While he may not appreciate his plays as much as he should, he knows the legendary Kobe Bryant would be smiling from the afterlife at his shots.

“These are the games I want to be a part of and I still feel like I played awful. I don’t want to take that many shots, but I know Kobe [Bryant] would be proud of me. But at the end of the day, we competed at a high level ’til the end and we got a great team win.”

And played well, they did. Atlanta held off Boston in overtime and would have reached the second overtime had Murray not stepped in with a midrange dagger. With 0.1 remaining on the clock, it ensures the Hawks’ win against one of the strongest teams in the NBA, which is quite an achievement.

Murray ended the night with 44 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and one block. He also attempted a whopping 44 shots, cementing him into league history with other great players.

Adding To The NBA’s Rich History

Fans were astounded by how many shots the guard was taking during the game. After he totaled 44 attempts, many pointed out that only the elite few attempted that number of shots. Specifically, the only other players in the last 20 seasons who made or surpassed these attempts are Bryant and Russell Westbrook, per StatMuse.

Funnily enough, Murray celebrates this fact with a joking tweet on X (formerly Twitter.)

Meanwhile, Zach Harper of The Athletic pulled up the stats to show how rare this is.

It’s quite the night for Hawks fans with Murray’s effort.
