DeMarcus Cousins Plans to Sign with the Los Angeles Clippers

Feb 17, 2021; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Houston Rockets center DeMarcus Cousins (15) blocks the shot attempt of Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid (21) during the fourth quarter at Wells Fargo Center.

Free-agent center DeMarcus Cousins plans to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the big man will likely sign a 10-day contract with the team.

The news of this signing comes nearly two months after Cousins and the Houston Rockets agreed to part ways in February. Cousins averaged career-lows in almost every significant statistical category with the Rockets this season, except for assists. He averaged 9.6 rebounds, 7.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.7 blocks in 20.2 minutes per game.

However, for his career, Cousins averages 20.8 points and 10.7. The Clippers will try to get as much of that production as possible from the big man as they seek to win their first championship.

Cousins spent his first six seasons with the Sacramento Kings. He made his debut all-star appearance in the 2014-15 season, during which he averaged 24.1 points and 12.7 rebounds.

The Sacramento Kings traded the 5-time all-star to the Pelicans during the 2016-17 season, where he enjoyed two excellent seasons for New Orleans. However, his career changed when he ruptured his Achilles during the 2017-18 season. He was averaging 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists in arguably his career-best season.

Cousins signed a contract with the defending champion Golden State Warriors for the 2018-19 season after the injury. He averaged 16.3 points and 8.2 rebounds in 25.7 minutes, though he only played in 30 games.

Cousins signed a contract to play for the Lakers in the 2019 offseason but tore his ACL before the 2019-20 season. He did not play that season.
