With their blowout victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night, the Phoenix Suns have won their twelfth straight game. Offensively, the Suns were led by Cam Johnson, who tallied a career-high 22 points. In the postgame press conference, Devin Booker was asked about what he’s seen from his teammate. He shared an appreciation for the third-year forward’s mentality.
I just congratulated him in the back. You know what he told me? ‘It’s not 50 or nothing.’ You got to crawl before you can run, man. I’m proud of him. I love the mentality.Devin Booker
Booker, a two-time all-star, echoed confidence that Johnson will have more nights with numbers comparable to what he did against Denver. The Suns’ 13-3 record ranks them as the second seed in the Westen Conference. They’ll look to continue their winning ways as they face off with the San Antonio Spurs on Monday.
Cameron Johnson on the Suns
Many were surprised that Cam Johnson ended up in Phoenix. Without a high rating going into the 2019 NBA draft, most expected Johnson to go somewhere between the late first-round and early second. Instead, James Jones and the Suns front office took a flier on the UNC product, selecting him with the eleventh overall pick.
In his short time with the team, Johnson has become a crucial figure in their lineup. His outstanding two-way play has made him one of their most valued assets. In addition, his versatility and range make him an easy fit at the four or three spots on both ends of the floor.
Though he has yet to break out as a consistent producer on offense, his potential shines more often than not. On the heels of his first appearance in the NBA finals, he should prove a key figure in any of the Suns’ future successes in the coming years.
