Dirk Nowitzki states Luka Doncic has already surpassed him

When basketball fans think of the Dallas Mavericks, they likely think of Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic. These two international players have been the focus of all things basketball in that city for the last couple of decades. Even better, these two have never hesitated to praise each other. The most recent comment comes from the 2011 Finals MVP, Dirk. When he sat down with NBA 2K, Dirk stated how Luka is better than his prime years.

“I would say he’s better than me now than I’ve ever been in my prime. That’s how good he is at 22 already.”

That should mean a lot coming from the future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer. Dirk Nowitzki put together quite the resume during his time in the NBA. He was 12-time All-NBA, an MVP, NBA champion, and 14-time All-Star. He is showing that he has tremendous admiration for the young star from Slovenia.

However, the admiration is not one-sided. In the Mavericks series against the Clippers, Luka bowed to Dirk, watching in the stands.

These two Dallas stars only shared the court for one season, and it was during Dirk’s last season. Despite that, these two have maintained a relationship. It became easier for them to stay in touch when Dirk accepted a “special advisor” position for the Mavericks.

If NBA fans are lucky, Luka will have a sustainable and healthy career in this league, just like his veteran mentor. So far, all signs are pointing to that possibility, as Luka averaged 27.7 PPG, 8.6 APG, and 8 RPG in his third year as the point guard for Dallas. A new generation of basketball phenoms is developing, and Doncic is one of the leaders in that group. Even better, he has a historic hooper in his corner.
