Fred VanVleet Scores 54 in a Historic Performance As The Raptors Outlast The Magic

Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet (23) drives to the basket as Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony (50) defends during the first quarter at Amway Center.

In one of the best performances of the NBA season, Raptors guard Fred VanVleet scored 54 in a 123-108 win over the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night. VanVleet’s stellar showing broke multiple records on the night.

VanVleet surpassed the previous scoring record for the Raptors, held by Demar DeRozan at 52 points. VanVleet also became only the fourth Raptor ever to score 50 or more in a game. The only others were DeRozan, Vince Carter, and Terrence Ross.

VanVleet also shot an outstanding 11-14 from three on the night. He was just short of the Raptors record for threes in a game, a title held by Donyell Marshal, who had 12 back in 2005. All of VanVleet’s threes came in the first three quarters. Many thought he might surpass Klay Thompson for the record for most threes in a game. The Golden State shooting guard holds the record for the most threes in a game with 14.

Recap of VanVleet’s Performance

VanVleet’s performance came with incredible efficiency. The former Witchita State guard shot 17-23 from the field with just one turnover. He averaged 1.93 points per possession, one of the highest marks of the season. The Magic struggled to contain VanVleet. Miscommunication and late rotations allowed VanVleet to get comfortable looks from anywhere on the floor. Even when the Magic did manage to get in VanVleet’s face, he continued to knock down shots. His range was limitless tonight, hitting threes from way beyond the arc.

This performance was much needed for the struggling Raptors. With a record of 9-12, the Raptors sit in 9th in the East. While many games remain in the season, it is a disappointing start for a team with championship aspirations. Toronto will hope that VanVleet can continue his strong play into these next few games ahead. The Raptors will matchup against the Nets, Hawks, and Grizzlies in their next three games.
