Gilbert Arenas Calls Zach Edey A Waste Of A Lottery Pick: ‘There’s Stupid General Managers Out There, So It Could Happen’

Purdue center Zach Edey (15) looks on after 72-66 win over Tennessee at the NCAA tournament Midwest Regional Elite 8 round at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Sunday, March 31, 2024.

Zach Edey has been on a historic run with the Purdue Boilermakers this year during March Madness. He has dominated both ends of the court and proven that he is the best player in men’s college basketball.

After a disappointing upset in the first round to Fairleigh Dickson last year, Edey has his team locked and loaded heading into the Final Four. Discussions have begun surrounding the seven-foot-four big man about what the future of his professional career could look like.

Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas had a hot take about the big man.

“I’m pretty sure he will slip because how’s he gonna play defense in the NBA?”

Gilbert Arenas said on the latest episode of Gil’s Arena

Edey’s potential of going in the lottery seems pretty unrealistic. However, with this being projected as a bit of a weaker class, anything could be on the table.

Edey is coming off a career-high 40-point performance against Tennessee in the Elite 8. The big man is currently averaging 30 points and 16.2 rebounds per game in this year’s tournament. He has been an unstoppable scorer in the paint.

“Waste of a lottery pick on that, but you know there’s stupid general managers out there, so it could happen.”

Edey will undeniably be one of the most interesting people to watch as the NBA Draft gets closer. He has unreal size and reach. However, his lack of ability to space the floor and guard on the perimeter is a serious issue.

His game translates perfectly to the college level due to the pace of the game and his unique size. It will be up to NBA GMs to see if they value his style of play at the next level which has moved around from the traditional big man.
