According to the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama’s official measurement barefoot is 7 feet and 3.5 inches barefoot. That means he’s around 7-foot-5 with shoes on, allowing him to tower over everybody he’s playing against. In a couple of years, perhaps his height will be the least of every opposing team’s worries.

The NBA is a league of athletic freaks. However, Victor Wembenyama may be the freakiest of the freaks as he towers over the average NBA player with his superhuman height and length. These natural physical attributes allowed the French rookie to be the favorite for the Rookie of the Year race and among the dark horses for Defensive Player of the Year.

Tall Task

When the San Antonio Spurs drafted Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, everyone expected a difficult process. He may need to put on weight and adjust to the pace and physicality of the NBA.

While that’s true in the case of the team as a whole, it looked like the 20-year-old has figured it out. Gregg Popovich did the fan base a favor by starting him at center on December 8, 2023, allowing the basketball fandom to see what Wembanyama can do.

According to NBA Stats, in the last 17 games as San Antonio’s starting center, he has averaged 21.1 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.8 blocks. He is only playing 26.6 minutes in these games, partly because the team is on the receiving end of blowouts (still).

That said, project these numbers to 36 minutes, and here’s how they look: 28.5 points, 14.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 5.2 blocks. Everyone, be on quadruple-double watch!

Wembanyama did not attend the NBA Draft Combine for obvious reasons. Still, the Spurs did their due diligence and measured their franchise cornerstone. Wembanyama’s official height is 7 feet, 3.5 inches barefoot. That puts him around 7-foot-5 with shoes! On top of that, he’s got an 8-foot measurement for his wingspan and a standing reach of nearly 10 feet!

The NBA has seen its fair share of vertical anomalies before. Gheorghe Muresan was officially listed as 7-foot-7, while Manute Bol, Shawn Bradley, Yao Ming, and Tacko Fall are listed as 7-foot-6.

Ralph Sampson, Mark Eaton, Rik Smits, and Boban Marjanovic are 7-foot-4. Besides Marjanovic and Wembanyama, Kristaps Porzingis is 7-foot-3, while Bol Bol and fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert are listed at 7-foot-2. These super-7-footers are some of the tallest players in NBA history, and Wembanyama can look at them eye to eye.

Nevertheless, nobody has seen the French wunderkind’s combination of skill and otherworldly physical attributes before.

NBA Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce put him in the top five most skilled players right now. Metta World Peace thinks he is the modern version of Wilt Chamberlain. Moreover, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst thought Wembanyama was more skilled than LeBron James was at the same age.

Exaggeration or not, these sentiments just show how high Wembanyama’s potential is. Well, that’s a scary thought.

Wembanyama is undeniably the future of the NBA. No basketball fan has seen anyone like him before, primarily because of the combination of skill, size, and physical attributes. He moves like a guard, covers ground like an antelope, and has extraordinary height.
