Role players in the NBA do not get enough recognition. The fans think that just because they do not get a good amount of minutes, they are not valuable to a team. For example, 36-year-old Jared Dudley has spent the last few years of his career at the end of the bench, not getting many minutes in a stacked Lakers team. The 2020 NBA champion went on JJ Reddicks podcast to explain why a player like him in a championship-contending team is valuable.
Jared Dudley has been in the NBA for a very long time. The Power Forward has been in the league for 16 years and has always been an important piece to an NBA team. In his first 12 seasons in the NBA, Dudley averaged over 19 minutes per game for four different teams. However, in his last two seasons with the Lakers, Jared averaged under 10 minutes per game. Leaving fans to think that he was not good enough or valuable enough to the team.
Camaraderie, this is why I excel in camaraderie. Im gonna be on the gambling table. Every team I been on Im gonna gamble with you. If I can take your money and you can take mine, we laugh it off then go drink some wine. Now, during the game I can go curse at you and you not gonna be sensitive to me.Jared Dudley on what he brings to the Lakers
Furthermore, Dudley mentions that his value comes from him being another coach to his teammates.
“My value is basically being another coach, but another coach (from the staff) cannot be in that locker room. He cant be on that bus. He cant eat dinner with us. It is a select few, and that is why it is a rare thing. That is why I get paid these minimums (contracts) over and over and over.”Jared Dudley on why he is valuable
Despite his great contributions in the NBA for over a decade, Dudley is now approaching the end of his career. As a Laker, he signed a one-year deal last winter and will become an unrestricted free agent this off-season. However, it will not be a surprise if Dudley signs another minimum contract, as NBA teams know how valuable he can be to a championship team.
