American fans that follow USA men’s basketball are likely caught off guard by the start of the exhibition games. Team USA kicked things off by losing two games in a row, first to Nigeria, then Australia. However, they did follow that up with a 28-point victory over Argentina this past Tuesday. Regardless, Kevin Durant, one of the veteran stars for team USA, is not concerned and says that context is essential when he talked with Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

“Were a team thats still coming together and trying to find our identity. We have so many great players that you can play so many different ways, and we are indecisive at times on defense and offense. In the midst of us figuring it out, these teams are established and theyre running their sets. Were working on our sets. The stars were kind of aligned for us to lose early on.”

Kevin Durant on Team USA’s early struggles

It makes sense that these other teams feel more established. Most of the international players have already been playing with one another. Durant later mentions that the international teams they are playing also have NBA players. However, there is a difference that Durant points out when comparing those international NBA players to the ones on the USA roster. Those international players are comfortable with being the main guy on their rosters.

Durant and Team USA going forward

Kevin Durant on Team USA understands that his team is in a unique situation with number one options from the top to bottom of their roster. These are players that need to figure out how to flow with each other on the same court. That does not even account for Devin Booker, who accepted to play for the USA team but is finishing up his run with the Phoenix Suns. The good news is that NBA stars are embracing the role of representing the United States of America. It will undoubtedly bring more excitement to the games this summer.
